Establishing a habit essentially involves the creation of a neurological loop consisting of a cue, a routine, and a reward. Understanding this loop is the first step towards habit formation. Thoughts?
I Disagree with the simplicity of the cue-routine-reward loop. It’s not always that straightforward. Motivation and context play huge roles too.Establishing a habit essentially involves the creation of a neurological loop consisting of a cue, a routine, and a reward. 66 days to stop eating midnight snacks? Guess I’ll start next monthFascinating discussion! Did you know that according to a study by Phillippa Lally, it takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit? This contradicts the old belief of 21 days.
That’s intriguing! Does the complexity of the habit affect the formation time? Would love to know more about variables affecting this.Fascinating discussion! It was Greg Philips on April 17th. Cues are vital as they trigger the brain to initiate a behavior, becoming more automatic over time.Didn’t someone earlier mention something about the importance of cues in habit formation? Can’t seem to remember who.

You’re spot on about cues. But don’t forget that the routine itself is what solidifies the habit. The more consistently you perform the routine, the stronger the neural pathway becomes, making the habit almost second nature. It was Greg Philips on April 17th. I think it’s possible to get back on track even if the routine is disrupted. It might take some time, but once you’re aware of the loop, you can consciously reestablish it. It’s not easy, though.I’m skeptical. What if the routine is disrupted? Doesn’t that throw off the whole loop? Habits seem fragile to me, easily broken if something in life changes.
